Removing Google from Android: What It Really Takes

Simply disabling Google apps isn't enough. We explain what it really takes to make an Android device genuinely privacy-safe.

Many users believe they can make their Android smartphone privacy-safe simply by disabling Google apps in the settings menu. Unfortunately, that's a misconception.

Why simply disabling them isn't enough

Google Play Services run at the system level and can't be fully disabled through the user interface. Even when the app is shown as "disabled," parts of the service keep running in the background.

What it really takes

  • Removing Google Play Services at the system level (root required)
  • Replacing the AOSP components that point to Google servers
  • Rebuilding the trust anchor for app signatures
  • Configuring your own DNS server to block Google domains
  • Installing a hardened operating system with no Google dependencies

At SaferPhone, we carry out all of this professionally and make sure the device stays stable and fully usable afterwards.
